Dunkin’s new morning weapon: A Belgian Waffle egg sandwich

WASHINGTON — Dunkin’ Donuts throws the latest morning menu lob in the fast-food fight for your breakfast business: a waffle sandwich.

The Belgian Waffle Breakfast Sandwich shows up on the Dunkin’ menu Aug. 29, with Cherrywood smoked bacon, egg and American cheese between two thick, deep-ridged Belgian Waffles. No mention of maple syrup, which might be a bit messy on a sandwich.

It will be served all day.

Mornings are the new battleground for fast-food rivals, even as most face slowing same-store sales growth. Dunkin’ Donuts’ comparable store sales grew just 0.5 percent last quarter.

McDonald’s same-store sales have benefitted since it added an all-day breakfast menu last fall.

Chick-fil-A recently added an Egg White Grill sandwich (although it removed its popular spicy chicken biscuit to make room on the menu for it). Burger King recently added the Egg-Normous Breakfast Burrito to its menu.

For Dunkin’ Donuts, morning is also a coffee battleground. After introducing its own branded K-Cup pods, it put cold-brew coffee on the menu earlier this month.

Dunkin’ Donuts parent company, Dunkin’ Brands, also owns the Baskin-Robbins chain. There are 11,900 mostly franchised Dunkin’ Donuts locations worldwide, and more than 7,700 Baskin-Robbins stores.
