WASHINGTON — Months after a Florida man flew a gyrocopter across the National Mall and landed on the front lawn of the U.S. Capitol, the North American Aerospace Defense Command and the Continental United States NORAD region will fly gyrocopters and a light aircraft over parts of D.C.
This Sunday, Falcon Virgo 15-13 will incorporate four small aircraft into its flight. The events are slated to occur in two intervals, between 9 and 11 a.m. EDT. The point, NORAD says, is to test their ability to identify and track such aircraft.
NORAD adds that the flights won’t go into “the critical areas of D.C.,” and聽that they won’t try to ground or intercept the gyrocopters.聽These flights will be at low altitude; they might be visible to the public. If you see something, NORAD urges you to聽report it, but to call 311 rather than 911.
The flights will be held聽Aug. 30 if the weather is bad.
