Fairfax County Sheriff’s Office describes death of inmate Saturday

WASHINGTON — The Fairfax County Sheriff’s Office聽says a 68-year-old man who died in custody on Saturday聽had an “extensive medical history.”

Police said Sunday in a news release that Paul Guida, no address provided, was arrested and brought to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center on Oct. 1 for violating a long standing protective order. Police said this was the third time he violated the order in 20 years but did not offer any details related to the charges.

According to police, Guida聽was immediately transferred to a cell in the infirmary due to “medical conditions that require frequent observation and treatment by medical staff.”

He failed to post bail聽and was there for 16 days. On Saturday,聽the deputy on duty found Guida to be “unresponsive”; he聽was declared dead after being transferred to Fairfax Hospital.

Sheriff’s Office policy dictates that this incident is classified as an in-custody inmate death. The incident聽is now under investigation by the Fairfax County Police Department.
