That鈥檚 amore: Pi Day inspires pop-up wedding at D.C. pizza shop

WASHINGTON 鈥 Arlington resident Katie Hendrickson loves three things: math, pizza and her fianc茅 鈥 in no particular order. And that combination made her decision to get married in a D.C. pizza shop on Saturday, March 14, an easy one.

After all, Saturday is Pi Day, the annual celebration of the mathematical constant that shares its first three digits with the date (3.14).

鈥淎nd this year is a really epic Pi Day, because the year is 2015 and the next two digits of the decimal expansion of pi is 3.1415,鈥 says Hendrickson, 30, a middle-school math teacher.

In more recent years, Pi Day has morphed into a holiday of sorts: Bakeries whip up pies decorated with the constant鈥檚 symbol (蟺), pizza parlors sell slices for $3.14 and bars discount their brews.

The town of Princeton, New Jersey, even commemorates the day with a festival.

But because Pi Day falls on a Saturday this year, many couples, including Hendrickson and her fianc茅, Michael, will celebrate by saying 鈥淚 do.鈥

At first, Hendrickson was slightly apprehensive about tying the knot on Pi Day.

鈥淚 asked a couple of friends, 鈥業s this too nerdy? Are we going too far by choosing Pi Day?鈥欌 The resounding answer was 鈥渘o,鈥 Hendrickson says, so the couple decided to lock down the date.

The spot for the nuptials, however, was suggested by photographer and co-owner Maggie Winters, 鈥渂ecause of the fun pizza pie tie-in,鈥 Hendrickson explains. The couple will exchange vows at U Street鈥檚 , whose 鈥淟ove &pizza鈥 printed to-go boxes keep with the theme of the day.

A small group of family and friends will come into town for the wedding, but it鈥檚 likely strangers 鈥 or, rather, the restaurant鈥檚 normal customers 鈥 will be in attendance as well. But that doesn鈥檛 bother Hendrickson.

鈥淚f people are there, I think it will make it even more fun,鈥 she says.

There won鈥檛 be a traditional cake-cutting after the short pop-up ceremony, but the new couple does plan to share a pizza as husband and wife 鈥 an act that will require compromise.

鈥淗e tends to like meat and I am a vegetarian,鈥 Hendrickson says.

鈥淟uckily, &pizza lets us customize the pizzas so we can get half pepperoni and half whatever fun veggies I want to put on mine.鈥

When asked whether she plans to have any other pi- (or pie)-themed items at the wedding, Hendrickson said she鈥檚 not planning on it.

鈥淚 think getting married on Pi Day is pretty dorky, itself, so we鈥檙e going to kind of take it easy on the other things.鈥
