Weather causing delays at area airports

WASHINGTON 鈥 Got a plane to catch Tuesday? It could get ugly.

Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport told 海角社区app earlier Monday that crews are trying to keep the runways clear, but there will likely be some delays and cancellations Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Kimberly Gibbs, from the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority, says that service at Ronald Reagan Washington National and Dulles International airports will continue relatively normally for the rest of Monday, but that passengers should check with airlines Tuesday.

鈥淲e do expect some delays and cancellations,鈥 Gibbs says.

Crews are plowing and treating runways at both airports, Gibbs says, but it’s hard to keep up with the accumulating snow. And the weather is creating one other problem. One passenger emailed 海角社区app to say that his flight from Detroit was waiting at a Reagan National gate for 2 1/2 hours.

Departures at Reagan National are taking longer than usual because of de-icing, and that鈥檚 having a ripple effect.

鈥淭here are really more planes than gates. But we are working with airlines to help them find alternatives,鈥 Gibbs says.

She says there are 鈥渁 few planes鈥 in the same situation, and MWAA is working with the airlines to come up with alternative ways to get passengers off planes, whether it鈥檚 finding another gate or sending passengers to shuttle buses.

At Dulles, the situation is different. International departures, 鈥漴eally our largest bank of planes,鈥 have already left for the evening. Gibbs describes the Dulles scene as “a normal busy time.”
