ROCKVILLE, Md. — A former Montgomery County court commissioner received no jail time at his sentencing聽Tuesday for聽a charge of sexual solicitation of a minor.
Prosecutors asked for 18 months behind bars for Daniel Read, but Montgomery Circuit Court Judge Sharon Burrell gave him five years of probation instead.
Read will also be required to to seek mental health treatment and to register as a sex offender.
“This individual has no prior record and the judge saw that there was some level of punishment for having his career ruined,” said Ramon Korionoff, with the Montgomery聽County State’s Attorney’s Office.聽“Having a person register on the sex offender registry is a good course of action for this individual.”
Read was accused of using social media and text messages to set up a meeting with someone he thought was a 15-year-old boy. It turned out to be an undercover聽detective carrying out an online sting operation.
The judge found Read guilty in June after a bench trial.
Another Montgomery County court commissioner,聽Israel Mangroo, also received probation for a recent sex-related crime.聽Mangroo pleaded guilty in March and was聽sentenced to 18 months of probation for using his phone to take a video up a woman’s skirt.
A court commissioner is responsible for reviewing charging documents and setting bonds when someone is booked into jail.
