Obama to make prime-time address in wake of California shootings

WASHINGTON 鈥 President Obama will address the nation Sunday聽night about the steps the federal government is taking to protect the nation, according to a statement from the White House.

The Oval Office address, scheduled for 8 p.m., will include an update on the investigation into the attack in San Bernardino, California.聽Obama is also expected to discuss the broader threat of terrorism, including the nature of the threat and how it has evolved.

According to the statement:

“(President Obama) will reiterate his firm conviction that ISIL will be destroyed and that the United States must draw upon our values 鈥 our unwavering commitment to justice, equality and freedom 鈥 to prevail over terrorist groups that use violence to advance a destructive ideology.”

On Wednesday, 14 people were killed and 21 people were wounded in a mass shooting at Inland Regional Center the Southern California聽town.

The FBI is investigating the the shooting as an act of terrorism.聽But the FBI wouldn’t say whether the husband-and-wife killers,聽Syed Farook and Tashfeen Malik, were part of a larger terror plot or belonged to a terror cell,聽.

Farook and聽Malik were killed in a gun battle with police.聽The Islamic State group鈥檚 official radio station has aired a statement saying the shooting was carried out by two 鈥渟upporters鈥 of the extremist group, .
