Bruce Springsteen sings out against Trump in ‘Streets of Minneapolis’

is dedicating his new song to the people of Minneapolis, criticizing President Donald Trump’s ongoing in the city.

The lyrics of released Wednesday, describe how 鈥渁 city aflame fought fire and ice 鈥檔eath an occupier鈥檚 boots,鈥 which Springsteen calls 鈥淜ing Trump鈥檚 private army.鈥

Springsteen in a statement said he wrote and recorded the song over the weekend and released it in response to by federal immigration agents in Minneapolis.

鈥淚t鈥檚 dedicated to the people of Minneapolis, our innocent immigrant neighbors and in memory of Alex Pretti and Renee Good,鈥 he wrote, naming the two victims.

Abigail Jackson, a White House spokesperson, responded: 鈥淭he Trump Administration is focused on encouraging state and local Democrats to work with federal law enforcement officers on removing dangerous criminal illegal aliens from their communities 鈥 not random songs with irrelevant opinions and inaccurate information.鈥

Springsteen’s slow-burning song builds from just acoustic guitar and voice to a fuller band tune, including a harmonica solo, and ends with chants of 鈥淚CE Out!鈥

鈥淥h our Minneapolis, I hear your voice,鈥 The Boss sings. 鈥淪inging through the bloody mist/We鈥檒l take our stand for this land/And the stranger in our midst.鈥

The title echoes Springsteen鈥檚 鈥淪treets of Philadelphia,鈥 which served as a title song for the Tom Hanks-led 1993 film 鈥淧hiladelphia.鈥 His song comes on the heels of English singer-songwriter Billy Bragg鈥檚 own 鈥淐ity of Heroes,鈥 which the protest singer wrote Sunday and released the next day. Bragg said in a statement that the song was inspired by Pretti鈥檚 killing and centers 鈥渢he bravery of the people of Minneapolis.鈥

who in turn has called the rock icon 鈥渙verrated.鈥 They last publicly clashed last year, when Springsteen on tour in England told his audience that America 鈥渋s currently in the hands of a corrupt, incompetent and treasonous administration.鈥 Trump responded by calling Springsteen a 鈥渄ried out prune of a rocker.鈥

In related news, Minneapolis’ First Avenue venue will host on Friday the benefit 鈥淎 Concert of Solidarity & Resistance to Defend Minnesota,鈥 featuring Tom Morello, Rise Against, Al Di Meola and Ike Reilly. All proceeds will go to the families of Good and Pretti.

鈥淲e are coming to Minneapolis where the people have heroically stood up against ICE, stood up against Trump, stood up against this terrible rising tide of state terror,鈥 Morello said in a statement.
