WASHINGTON – There are some major changes coming to Springfield Mall, where the landlord plans to close all stores except the anchor department stores this summer.
The Macy’s, Target and JCPenney will be the only stores remaining open in July, when Vornado Realty Trust begins a two-year renovation of the aging shopping center.
In recent years, the mall has seen an increase in crime both inside and outside the shopping center.
Vornado purchased the mall at the end of 2011 for about $115 million.
The first phase of the redevelopment will include a new food court and a state-of-the-art movie theater.
Patch reports the renovation will include a four-part plan to transform the 80-acre site into the Springfield Town Center, according to the Fairfax County’s Office of Revitalization and Reinvestment.
The new site will include mixed-use retail, office and residential space.
