WASHINGTON – All lanes of northbound Interstate 95 in Stafford County have reopened after an accident involving a car and a tractor-trailer.
The accident completely closed the northbound interstate for more than five hours at mile marker 138.
Two lanes reopened at 5 a.m. Wednesday, and the final lane reopened after 6:30- a.m.
The Virginia Department of Transportation will be back on the scene to finish the cleanup after the morning commute.
The accident occurred at 11:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Virginia State Police say Ahmed Mohammed, 24, of Falls Church, Va. was driving a 2006 Honda CRV in the left lane of northbound I-95 when he lost control and ran off the right side of the highway. Police say Mohammed overcorrected and struck a tractor-trailer in the center lane and then struck a guardrail on the right shoulder.
Virginia State Police tell 海角社区app’s Kristi King, who was on the scene, Mohammed was trying to avoid a deer and that he clipped the gas tank of the tractor-trailer.
The tractor trailer jackknifed and spilled 150 gallons of diesel fuel.
Neither vehicle struck the deer.
Police cited Mohammed for reckless driving. The tractor-trailer operator was not cited.
Mohammed, a 23-year-old woman and a 20-year-old man were transported to Mary Washington Hospital for treatment. All are expected to survive.
The tractor-trailer driver was not injured.
