In Fairfax Co., jobs boom could lead to housing crunch

WASHINGTON – Some might say it’s a good problem to have: Over the next two decades, the D.C. area will gain more than 850,000 jobs. More than half of them will come to Northern Virginia, and about 134,000 jobs will be added in Fairfax County alone.

But where will everyone live?

According to a new report by the , Fairfax County will need to develop about 85,000 new housing units — about 81 a week for 20 years. The need for additional housing is greater in Fairfax than any other county in Northern Virginia.

Researchers say more professional sector jobs will be available, and most workers will be looking for single-family homes in the $400,000 to $600,000 price range.
