Montgomery Co. bag tax on track to bring in $2 million

WASHINGTON – Montgomery County’s bag tax is set to bring in plenty of cash to clean up local streams and rivers.

The county’s 5-cent bag fee is on pace to bring in about $2 million during the second year of the program. This year’s totals are similar to what D.C. raised during the second year of its program in 2012.

The latest available numbers show the Montgomery County tax generated $1.7 million from January through October of this year, .

When the numbers for the entire year come in, county leaders plan to the tax to focus on grocery stores and other retailers that sell significant amounts of food.
