Taking new steps to diagnose concussions

WASHINGTON — Last week, a White House summit focused on young athletes and concussions. With so many children in sports programs, new steps are being taken to prevent, treat and properly identify head trauma.

“It’s absolutely imperative that they understand how to recognize a concussion,” says Dr. Michael Yochelson, a neurologist and Chief Medical Officer for the MedStar National Rehabilitation Network.

It’s also important for youth coaches to recognize the signs of a concussion, which include headaches and changes in cognition.

Concussed athletes who show confusion, nausea or dizziness should be taken to the emergency room.
