Group seeks to resume car races at Md. airport

CUMBERLAND, Md. (AP) — A car-racing group in Cumberland wants to resume racing at the local airport next year.

The Cumberland Times-海角社区app (http://bit.ly/1Caks3p) reported Tuesday that National Road Autosports has asked the Potomac Highlands Airport Authority to consider the request at its October meeting.

The group says it wants the airport authority to help it develop a safety plan addressing concerns that prompted the board to reject the group’s plan to hold events this year. The group has held timed races, known as autocross races, on the airport tarmac since 2003.

The airport is located in Wiley Ford, West Virginia, just across the Potomac River from Cumberland. It does not have scheduled commercial passenger service but is used by business planes and other small aircraft.
