WASHINGTON — Don’t believe everything you hear on voicemail.
Scammers are calling private numbers and warning people of impending action by the Treasury Department.
A 海角社区app staffer even got two of the messages within hours of one another.
It said:
“This message is intended to contact you. My name is Gil Martin and I am calling regarding enforcement actions executed by U.S. Treasury intending your serious attention. Ignoring this will be an initial second attempt to avoid an appearance before a magistrate or grand jury for federal offenses.”
The message a included a number to call back. When that number was dialed, a man answered the phone claiming he was with the treasury department. In the background, other people making similar calls could be heard.
The man hung up when questioned about his business.
Some who have picked up the phone say they were told they had to pay back taxes immediately or they would be arrested. They are instructed to wire money or put it on a pre-paid credit card.
