More than 70 vehicles make IIHS list of safest on the road

WASHINGTON —聽More than 70 vehicle models are ranking as some of the safest on the road, according to聽.

The IIHS released their list of the top safety picks Tuesday and 71 vehicles earned the honors for 2015. Thirty-three vehicles made the prestigious Top Safety Pick+ list, while the others were named Top Safety Pick winners.

This year, the number of top safety pick vehicles increased from 39 in 2014.

鈥淭he list of top safety pick winners is longer in 2015 because automakers are making changes to get the best ratings,鈥 says IIHS President Adrian Lund. 鈥淭hey鈥檙e improving small overlap crash protection and they are adding front-crash prevention systems to more mainstream vehicles.鈥

The list comes out at the tail end of a year swamped with news of 听补苍诲

The list uses results from crash test ratings to determine the picks.

The vehicles that make the list have a 鈥済ood鈥 or 鈥渁cceptable鈥 rating in the small overlap front crash test, along with good ratings in the other four crash test evaluations. Additionally, the聽Top Safety Pick+ winners must have an advanced or superior rating for front crash prevention.

  • Toyota Avalon

Large Luxury Cars

  • Hyundai Genesis
  • Infiniti Q70 (except V-8 4WD)

  • Mercedes-Benz E-Class
  • Volvo S80
