Caps player earns Metropolitan division captain spot in NHL All-Star game

WASHINGTON — Washington Capitals left wing Alex Ovechkin聽is one of the first four players to be chosen as a division captain for the聽2016 Honda NHL All-Star Game held in Nashville, Tennessee later this month.

The Great Eight聽along with聽Jaromir Jagr of the Florida Panthers, Patrick Kane of the Chicago Blackhawks and John Scott of the Arizona Coyotes all earned spots聽in the All-Star game, thanks to the All-Star Fan Vote.

Fans chose Ovechkin to lead the Metropolitan division聽and the other three players to lead the Atlantic, Central and Pacific divisions after a month-long voting period, which lasted from Dec. 1 to Jan. 1.

The All-Stars will play 3-on-3聽in a three-game tournament, with four teams representing each NHL division, according to a press release.

The National Hockey League Hockey Operations Department will聽determine the remaining 40 players from the the four All-Star rosters comprised of six forwards, three defensemen and two goaltenders per team, before the announcement on Wednesday.

The All-Star game is set for聽5 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 31 in Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena. NBCSN will broadcast the game.
