**Pet of the Week:听Redbud** *For the week of听Dec. 12* Redbud is a 5-year-old lab mix and one of the sweetest dogs you will ever meet. She recently had a litter of puppies and now that they’ve all found forever homes, it’s her turn! **Pet of the Week:听Lissa** *For the week of听Nov. 28* Meet Lissa! Lissa is a big, beautiful lab mix looking to find her forever home. Lissa came to the Humane Rescue Alliance after being transferred from another shelter. She is a happy-go-lucky girl, and she can鈥檛 wait to meet her new family. 听At just over 1 year old, this big girl has lots of energy and **loves**听to play!听 She鈥檚 very intelligent, knows some tricks and loves her toys 鈥斕齟specially when a game of fetch is involved. Kyle is a 3-year-old Labrador mix who, at nearly 70 pounds, could still stand to gain a little weight. He鈥檚 an over-sized love bug who is happy, friendly, and affectionate 鈥� all the good things a dog should be! **Pet of the Week:听Cassie** *For the week of听Nov. 14* Meet Cassie. This sweet beagle mix arrived at the Humane Rescue Alliance (HRA) from Alabama with her puppies. Now that they鈥檝e been weaned and adopted, it鈥檚 her turn. At 2 years old, Cassie鈥檚 not much more than a pup herself 鈥� without all of that typical “puppy behavior.” She鈥檚 sweet and gentle and would love a home where she could enjoy long walks and time cuddling with her human companions. Cassie does well with other calm dogs, but would be just as happy as someone鈥檚 one and only. **Pet of the Week:听Teeny** *For the week of听Nov. 7* Don’t let the name fool you, there is nothing teeny about this pup. Teeny is a 3-year-old Cane Corso or Italian Mastiff. He came to the HRA with his two dog siblings who, believe it or not, were both less than 25 pounds. At 114 pounds, he is as a big guy, but the HRA staff classifies him as a big, goofy lap dog. Teeny doesn’t听comprehended his size 鈥�. he thinks he 听is just as small as his siblings. **Cat of the Week:听Lambo听** *For the week of Oct. 25* It鈥檚 hard to believe this handsome big boy was mistaken for a pregnant female, but that鈥檚 how Lambo was identified to animal control officers when he was discovered in an office bathroom. How Lambo got there, we鈥檒l never know, but right now he鈥檚 hanging out in Kitty City at the Humane Rescue Alliance鈥檚 Oglethorpe Adoption Center. Lambo is a favorite with staff and volunteers, who can鈥檛 understand why he hasn鈥檛 been adopted yet. But, hey, someone else鈥檚 loss could be your gain! **Pet of the Week: Blanco听** *For the week of Oct. 17听* Are you one of those people who just adores big dogs? If so, the Washington Humane Society-Washington Animal Rescue League has the perfect dog for you. His name is Blanco and he鈥檚 a purebred American bulldog. That鈥檚 right, purebred! Blanco found himself at the shelter when his people could no longer care for him. At 3 years old, he鈥檚 past the puppy stage but is very strong and has lots of energy. Although he looks intimidating, Blanco can actually be a bit shy initially but give him a few minutes and he鈥檒l be trying to give you doggy kisses. This 3-year-old domestic short-hair cat found herself at the Washington Humane Society-Washington Animal Rescue League after a Good Samaritan discovered her abandoned in a cardboard box. Despite this indignity, Firecracker prefers to focus on the positive aspects of life. She enjoys her accommodations in Kitty City (although she鈥檇 prefer a 鈥渞eal鈥� home) and interacting with staff and volunteers. She likes affection and being petted but sometimes prefers just taking a catnap in the sun by herself. In addition to stunning good looks, this 2-year-old domestic medium hair feline has a personality to match: social, friendly, and outgoing. It鈥檚 hard to believe this paragon of feline charm comes from the streets of D.C., where he was beaten up by other cats. This handsome Lab mix was understandably confused by his change in circumstances and overwhelmed by shelter life, but thanks to extra attention from staff and volunteers, his happy, fun-loving personality has begun to shine! **Cat听of the Week:听Taz** *For the week of听Sept. 12* At just 5 years old, Taz has already had a roller coaster of a life. This handsome tabby was originally brought to the Washington Humane Society-Washington Animal Rescue League as a tiny, unweaned kitten after being discovered hungry and dehydrated inside the wall of a vacant apartment. He was then adopted by a loving family who adored him! Sadly, a change in the family’s circumstances meant they could no longer care for him, and they reluctantly returned him to WHS-WARL. After years in a home, Taz has found life in Kitty City somewhat stressful, and spends most of his time in his own tower. But he adores human companionship and will climb in your lap almost immediately if given a chance, pushing his head under your hand to encourage stroking. **Pet of the Week:听Jessie** *For the week of听Sept. 6听* Plenty of women pay lots of money to get smokey eyes like Jessie’s, but this lucky girl was born with them. Jessie is a 2-year-old retriever mix who arrived at the Washington Humane Society-Washington Animal Rescue League from Virginia. She鈥檚 a bit shy, but very sweet: Just give her some time and she’ll reward you with cuddles and kisses. Jessie is selective about her canine companions, so she might prefer a home where she has her human companion鈥檚 undivided attention and affection. Like many dogs who were not given heartworm preventative, Jessie is heartworm positive, but that shouldn鈥檛 deter you from welcoming this girl into your heart and home. **Cat(s)听of the Week: Rick and Sia听** *For the week of听Sept. 6听* Meet Rick and Sia, two handsome boys looking for loving homes 鈥� preferably together. To look at them, you鈥檇 never know these BFFs once lived in a hoarding situation with more than 40 other cats. But when they first arrived at the Washington Humane Society-Washington Animal Rescue League, they were scared, confused and not socialized; Rick would even hiss and swat at people who tried to interact with him. Thanks to the dedicated efforts of WHS-WARL behavior and training staff, however, Rick and Sia have blossomed! 听Rick, a 2-year-old orange tabby, is sweet and incredibly affectionate. He loves to have his head and cheeks rubbed and will lean in and roll over on his side for attention. Sia, 1-year-old, fancies himself a private investigator; he enjoys playing, climbing, investigating and learning new things. Because of their background, both boys can be a little shy in new environments, although they acclimate quickly. And like all the cats from the hoarding situation, they are more relaxed when near another feline, relying on each other for social and emotional support. Rick and Sia would love a home with human companions who will continue working on building their confidence through positive reinforcement training. **Pet of the Week:听Denver听** *For the week of Aug. 29* Meet Denver. Denver is a 3-year-old Border Collie/Australian Shepherd mix with a very handsome brown-and-black coat and sweet, welcoming eyes. He is a very happy pup that loves to meet new people, and is anxious to find a new home. Visitors meeting Denver will see that all it takes is a kind word or a pat on the head to get his tail wagging like crazy. Denver is cautious around other dogs, especially with highly energetic or 鈥減ushy鈥� dogs, so he would prefer a home where he is the only dog or a home with a dog that is laid back and accepting. This gentle Lab mix lived with the same family her whole life, but ended up at the Washington Humane Society-Washington Animal Rescue League when they could no longer care for her. While she waits for someone to fall in love with her 鈥� and that鈥檚 not hard to do 鈥� she鈥檚 being doted on by staff and volunteers. Because she lived with small children and other dogs, Marzipan would be a great addition to a family that’s looking to add to their 鈥減ack.鈥� At 9 years old, she鈥檚 well past all the puppy nonsense, while still having a lot of life left to live 鈥� and love to give. Although Marzipan definitely enjoys getting out of the house and taking leisurely walks, she鈥檚 more of a mellow companion than a running buddy. She can’t hear very well, but don’t worry; her sense of smell is second to none, and if she smells some cheese in your hand, you鈥檒l have her undivided attention. **Pet of the Week:听Eve** *For the week of听Aug. 1* They say beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Well, everyone at the Washington Humane Society-Washington Animal Rescue League who has met little Eve agrees she is indeed beautiful 鈥� despite her mangled ears. At only 4 months old, this little shepherd mix was the victim of the cruel practice of home ear cropping, often performed without anesthesia in an unsterile environment. Not surprisingly, Eve鈥檚 ears were infected when she arrived at an Alabama shelter. But thanks to good medical care, she has recovered and faces a bright future. Eve is a bit timid 鈥� who can blame her 鈥� but very, very sweet! She鈥檒l wiggle right over and climb in your lap for cuddles and even give gentle little kisses in return. She鈥檇 love nothing better than a loving home with patient people who will show her that the world truly can be her Garden of Eden. **Pet of the Week:听Beaxtrix** *For the week of听Aug. 1* Meet Beaxtrix, a beautiful blue-grey cat with breathtaking green-gold eyes currently available for adoption at the Washington Humane Society-Washington Animal Rescue League. At some point in her life, this 4-year-old girl was declawed. And although we鈥檒l never know for sure, we think her resulting inability to defend herself has made her fearful of 鈥� and miserable around 鈥� other felines. Not surprisingly, life in Kitty City was incredibly stressful for Beatrix, so she鈥檚 now spending quiet, quality time as an office foster, where she鈥檚 quickly blossoming into a lovely, delightful cat who enjoys human company and all the attention it brings. **Pet of the Week:听Houston听** *听For the week of May 16* Houston is one of those dogs whose ancestry is a true mystery to everyone but his mother 鈥� and maybe even to her. The shape of his head and his build resemble that of a bulldog, while the color and texture of his fur suggest shepherd.听 What we can say with authority is that Houston is a really nice boy! He seems to like everyone 鈥� both people and other dogs, despite what we imagine was a rough start in life. His teeth need some work, he needs to put on a few pounds and his tail appears to have been badly docked at some point, but once this sweet 6-year-old looks at you with his big brown eyes and puts his paws up on you, that stubby tail wagging, nothing else matters. **Pet of the Week:听Lizzo听** *For the week of May 16* Lizzo is a stunningly beautiful cat who is feeling a bit lost at the shelter. He spent virtually all of his three years in a loving home but found himself at the Washington Humane Society/Washington Animal Rescue League when his human companion developed severe asthma. Of course, he doesn鈥檛 understand that. Upon arrival, he decided to ignore the world around him, preferring the security of his condo to explorations of Kitty City or interaction with staff and volunteers. Behavior and training staff decided Lizzo would be a perfect candidate for the Jackson Galaxy Foundation鈥檚鈥淐at Pawsitive鈥� Program. As part of this program, which aims to increase the adoptability of shelter cats, staff are working with Lizzo on targeting 鈥� rewarding him for touching his nose to their hands or marking their hands with his cheek 鈥� in an effort to build his self-confidence and encourage engagement. And he鈥檚 already making strides, spending more time outside the 鈥渃ubbyhole鈥� portion of his condo and venturing out into the larger world of Kitty City. Like the Peanuts character for which he鈥檚 named, this beagle mix is sweet, uncomplicated and accepting of what life has to offer. Simply put, he鈥檚 a good boy.

**Pet of the Week: Macaw** *听For the week of May 2听* He may have been named for a regal-looking bird with a long, impressive tail, but this little Macaw couldn鈥檛 be more different. First, he鈥檚 definitely not regal; rather, he鈥檚 a silly, short-legged, wiggle-butt of a dog who greets visitors with some impressive rear-end action. He also has almost no tail at all鈥he result of an early amputation for medical reasons. But regal or not, Macaw will grab your attention and capture your heart with his happy, playful personality and adorable underbite.听 He prefers human companionship to that of other dogs so he鈥檚 looking for a home where he can be the only pet (more petting for him, he says). We can say with assurance that he is sweet and affectionate and, despite his large size, considers himself a lap dog. If you sit on the floor, he鈥檚 likely to put both paws on your shoulders and give you a hug before climbing into your lap for a cuddle.
