Prince George鈥檚 County Council overrides Baker鈥檚 budget veto

WASHINGTON — The Prince George’s County Council voted Tuesday to override County Executive Rushern Baker’s budget veto, preventing a double-digit property tax hike.

Residents and businesses have said such a tax increase is unaffordable and hurtful to the county’s economy.

, Baker said the council violated the county charter when it rejected his 2016 budget. Instead of Baker’s proposed property tax-rate increase of 11 cents, the council wanted an increase of 4 cents. However, a charter provision states they can only amend the budget revenue estimates they are given by 1 percent.

Baker has said the matter may end up being decided in court.
