WASHINGTON 鈥� With one notable exception, it鈥檚 been a smooth opening day for the Prince George鈥檚 County Public Schools, the system鈥檚 CEO says.
Kevin Maxwell told 海角社区app at about 6:40 a.m. Tuesday that while several school construction projects were still wrapping up, everything was in order for schools to open. The exception is Thomas Stone Elementary School, which suffered a water main break and was closed for Tuesday. Maxwell says repairs should be finished in the afternoon.
The school system is greeting more than 129,000 students, and Maxwell says that number has grown in each of the past few years, calling it 鈥渁 good sign for us.鈥� He adds that the teaching staff has kept up with the increases in enrollment.
鈥淲hile there are more kids, there should be an adequate number of teachers as well.鈥�
Running a school system means running a lunch program, a breakfast program, a transportation system and more. Maxwell says that he hopes more kids will take advantage of the breakfast program, citing the importance of nutrition to school performance.
With the bus schedules, he says that it does “sometimes take a little bit of time to get the schedules right when school first starts, because traffic patterns change,鈥� but that so far things are running smoothly.
