Candlelight vigil Sunday for Prince George鈥檚 Co. officer killed outside station

WASHINGTON 鈥 There will be a candlelight vigil this weekend to remember Prince George鈥檚 County Police officer Jacai Colson, who was killed during a shootout with a man who allegedly wanted to provoke officers into killing him.

On Sunday, the police department will hold a vigil and a moment of silence in honor of Colson.

鈥淲e will stand side by side to honor both Jacai’s life and service and the bravery and dedication of our five other police officers so deeply affected that tragic day,鈥 police said in a news release.

On March 13, 28-year-old Colson responded to the District III police station in Landover after police say 22-year-old Michael Ford opened fire on the building and passing vehicles. Colson, who was in plainclothes and an unmarked police car, was deliberately shot by a fellow officer who did not recognize him and viewed him as an armed threat, said Police Chief Hank Stawinski earlier this week.

Ford鈥檚 two brothers, Malik and Elijah Ford, drove him to the scene of the shooting and recorded the gunfight on their cellphones. On the way, they recorded 22-year-old Ford giving his 鈥渓ast will and testament,鈥 police said.

Michael Ford faces more than two dozen charges, including second-degree murder. Malik and Elijah face charges including attempted murder and conspiracy to commit murder.

The vigil will be in the District III parking lot on Barlowe Road at 4:15 p.m.

鈥淎t 4:30, the moment the attack on our home began, we will hold a moment of silence,鈥 police said in a release.
