Name of fallen Prince George’s Co. firefighter added to Md. memorial

WASHINGTON —聽 Prince George’s County firefighter John Ulmschneider, who聽was killed on April 15 while answering a call in Temple Hills, was聽memorialized聽at the聽Maryland Fire-Rescue Services Memorial in Annapolis on Sunday.

Ulmschneider’s name was聽added to a wall that聽includes the names of more than 400 firefighters and emergency medical service providers who died in the line of duty.

He聽was shot to death and firefighter Kevin Swain was wounded when they forced their way聽into a home to provide emergency medical care.

“This is such a tragic incident. No one ever expects a firefighter or paramedic to be shot and killed in the line of duty.聽 It’s still so bizarre and still poignantly fresh to us in the department,” said Prince George’s County Fire Chief Marc Bashoor.

The Maryland memorial features the bronze figures of a firefighter and EMT climbing stairs, which symbolizes their deaths in the line of duty.
