One of the zebras that escaped from a Prince George’s County farm in August, has been found dead.
Maryland Natural Resources Police spokeswoman Lauren Moses said the animal was found Sept. 16 in a snare trap near a field.
Police responded to the scene along Duley Station Road in Upper Marlboro, just a few miles from the farm where the animals came from.
Moses said, at this point, investigators don’t know who placed the snare trap there, but those kind of traps are illegal in Prince George’s County.
Another development in the case has to do with how many zebras broke out of their enclosure in the first place.
It was initially believed that five zebras escaped, but Linda Lowe, a spokeswoman with the county department of the environment, said the owner now thinks only three zebras got out.
That leaves just two animals that still need to be recaptured.
Animal control has been trying to catch the zebras by setting up a feeding station and a 8-foot-tall corral.
鈥淭hey are animals that you just can鈥檛 walk up and put a lasso on,鈥� county Animal Control Chief Rodney Taylor told the Associated Press. 鈥淭hey鈥檙e going to run away from you.鈥�
Moses said Maryland Natural Resources Police will continue to assist the Prince George’s County Animal Services with the situation.
