Local police remind drivers school zones still apply in summer

WASHINGTON — Most motorists know that when school is in session, they need to slow down when driving through a school zone. But when school is out, the rules still apply.

Sgt. Jonathon Perok, with the Prince William County police, says that just because it’s summertime, that doesn’t mean drivers can ignore school zones.

“Many residents may see lights on and think they are in error, but we definitely want to make sure they know they need to be obeyed when lit … just as they were in the normal school year,” he聽said.

Many kids in the region聽are in summer school until late July, and Virginia law requires the signs light up a half-hour before the first bell and a half hour after dismissal.

Perok adds that聽there are still more pedestrians than average in school zones all year round.
