Georgetown wins thriller to net first men’s soccer title

The Georgetown Hoyas edged the Virginia Cavaliers, 7-6 on penalty kicks, to win their first NCAA men’s soccer championship in a thrilling finish between area schools.

The game went to sudden-death overtime tied 3-3 and neither team scored, sending the game to a second OT in which the two teams again played to a stalemate. The two teams traded penalty kicks until Tomas Romero stopped Axel Gunnarsson鈥檚 shot to clinch victory for the Hoyas.

Only once have the Hoyas made it to the College Cup, back in 2012, but lost in the finals to 8-time Cup winner Indiana.
