United adds first-ever direct flight from Dulles to Athens as international travel slowly ramps up

United Airlines (NASDAQ: UAL) has added a direct flight from Dulles International Airport to Athens, Greece, the airline announced Monday, as it grows its route network to include countries that have reopened to visitors vaccinated from Covid-19.

The daily flights, the first between D.C. and Athens, begin July 1 and will operate through Oct. 3 on a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner. The flights are subject to government approval, as are new flights, three times a week, from Dulles to Accra, Ghana.

鈥淎s countries around the world begin the process of reopening, leisure travelers are showing optimism for the opportunity to take a long-awaited getaway to new international destinations,鈥 Patrick Quayle, United鈥檚 vice president of international network and alliances, said in a statement.

United also announced new flights from New Jersey’s Newark Liberty International Airport to Dubrovnik, Croatia, and from Chicago鈥檚 O鈥橦are International Airport to Reykjavik, Iceland. Per the airline, in鈥
