Va. energy company’s has plan to save thousands of customers money

WASHINGTON 鈥 A聽new take on an existing program is going to help a lot more people save money this winter on their energy bills.

Dominion Virginia Power’s 30-year-old energy share program is finding new life and, more importantly, funding to help thousands more customers.

“We’ve made a commitment of $57 million over the next five years,” says聽Ken Barker who leads the company’s community partnerships.

The program previously serving seniors and low-income residents will now assist veterans.

“A聽lot of the categories is what qualifies under other state programs,” he says.

New to the program, weatherizing customers homes.

“We would do probably do eight to 12聽things,聽see if your聽heat pump needs a tune up, new fan motors if you need them in your air conditioner,” Baker offers as examples.

The aim he says is to leave a customer’s home weatherized to save them 10-15 percent on their bill.

Customers can learn if they qualify by calling 2-1-1.

“Its’ nice and warm out there, but winter is coming. It’s really a good time to get this done this fall,” Baker says.
