Chain Bridge has reopened after being blocked for several hours Monday afternoon following a crash involving an overturned dump truck.

The bridge, which carries traffic from Arlington, Virginia, to Northwest D.C., reopened in both directions shortly after 4:30 p.m. Monday.

The entire span of the bridge was closed around noon Monday following the crash involving the dump truck and three other vehicles just before the bridge on the Virginia side.

The truck was overturned in the crash, spilling concrete debris across the roadway and trapping the driver inside.

Arlington County firefighters worked for about an hour Monday afternoon to free the truck driver. The driver was taken to the hospital with injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening, the fire department said. No one else was seriously hurt in the crash.

The bridge was closed for more than four hours Monday as officials investigated the crash and cleaned up debris.

Before the bridge reopened, heavy traffic had begun to jam on the outbound Clara Barton Parkway and on George Washington Parkway.

Chain Bridge carries an average of 31,000 vehicles between Arlington and Northwest D.C.
