Warm, windy Tuesday for DC area, ahead of midweek rain

Expect warm, dry and windy conditions to return Tuesday as afternoon highs rise into the 70s and 80s across the D.C. area, more than 10 degrees above normal for early May.

Despite the early-summer feel, temperatures will remain well below the daily record of 94 set in 1928.

Tuesday morning begins in the upper 50s to low 60s, leading to a “windy and very warm day, considering the time of year,” said 7º£½ÇÉçÇøapp First Alert Meteorologist Steve Rudin.

Strong southerly winds will develop through the afternoon, with gusts topping 30 mph at times. Combined with low humidity and dry ground, these conditions increase the risk for fires to spread quickly.

Warm and breezy weather continues into the evening, with sunset at 8:05 p.m. Clouds increase late Tuesday ahead of a cold front.

7º£½ÇÉçÇøapp First Alert Meteorologist Eileen Whelan said that front brings widespread showers to the D.C. region Wednesday, with rain developing by morning and continuing through the day. She said a thunderstorm is possible, but the overall severe weather threat remains low. Any storms that do form are expected to produce brief downpours and gusty winds rather than widespread impacts.

The National Weather Service said rain will linger into early Thursday before tapering off as cooler air settles in. Whelan said combined rainfall from Wednesday into Thursday morning is expected to total between about a half inch and 1.25 inches.

Drier and more comfortable conditions return Friday, with sunshine, lower humidity and highs climbing back into the upper 60s.
