Fire drill helps Alexandria girl, 5, save family from fire

WASHINGTON —聽A 5-year old Alexandria girl got a hero’s welcome after helping save her family from a fire in their home in the middle of聽the night.

The fire happened a few weeks before the Thanksgiving holiday, but聽Gabby Mushahwar’s lifesaving efforts were recognized on Monday– “Gabby’s Day” — 聽by firefighters at Reagan National Airport at fire station 301.

The fire had happened in the middle of the night.聽聽When聽Gabby heard the smoke detector go off she聽rolled out of bed and聽crawled to her parent’s bedroom.聽 Then she聽calmly begin instructing them how聽to get low and crawl and聽to check the doors to see if they were聽hot as she聽lead them safely out of their home and to their designated meeting place outside.

鈥淲e were so thankful that she knew what to do,”聽聽mom Amy Mushahwar tells聽.

Mushahwar says her daughter learned what to do from going through a fire safety training聽obstacle course offered by the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments during the聽Dulles Day Family Festival and Plane Pull in September.

“We instantly knew that she got it from this exercise,” 聽she said. The exercise was the fire safety training obstacle聽course which is called “Plan Your Great Escape.”聽聽聽Her mother, turning to the five-year-old during the interview, is clearly聽proud of her daughter, and very grateful. “You did a good job baby girl.”
