WASHINGTON 鈥� A Crofton, Maryland, man is in critical but stable condition after he was shot in his house by a police officer Saturday.
The Anne Arundel County police say that they were told early Saturday afternoon that a 21-year-old man who lives on Chamberlain Court had been sending text messages to the effect that he was considering harming himself or members of his family.
When the police got there and knocked on the door, no one let them in. Knowing that someone else was in the house and fearing they were in danger, officers forced their way into the house. When they did, the man 鈥減resented鈥� a rifle-style gun, the police say. An officer then shot him in the abdomen.
He was taken to University of Maryland Shock Trauma and was listed in critical but stable condition on Sunday. An officer who used a pocketknife to cut the man鈥檚 shirt off to perform first aid accidentally cut his arm; he was treated at a hospital and released.
The police say that the shot was fired by a supervisor and 30-year veteran; he鈥檚 on paid administrative leave, a routine matter in these cases.
The police say that they haven鈥檛 charged the man with anything yet, and won鈥檛 identify him until and unless they do.
