WASHINGTON 鈥� George Washington University President Steven Knapp won’t seek to renew his contract when it expires in July 2017, departing after 10 years at the helm.
Knapp, who was named GW’s 16th President in 2007, will serve as president through the next academic year.
The university will immediately begin a search for his successor.
鈥淣early 10 years ago the Board of Trustees made a transformational decision to hire Steve Knapp to lead the George Washington University,鈥� said Nelson Carbonell, board chairman. 鈥淗e has served ably with integrity and foresight and has forever changed the university’s trajectory.鈥�
Knapp did not say what his plans were after leaving the university, though he has strong ties to the D.C. region.
Knapp serves on the board of the Economic Club of Washington; the Greater Washington Urban League; the Federal City Council; the Northern Virginia Technology Council; the Greater Washington Board of Trade; the World Affairs Council – Washington, DC; the National Symphony Orchestra; and the Washington National Cathedral Chapter.
Knapp, a senior administrator at Johns Hopkins University prior to joining GW, succeeded University President Stephen Trachtenberg. Trachtenberg served as GW President for 19 years.
Prior to Johns Hopkins, Knapp was a faculty member at the University of California at Berkeley.
