Helen Hayes Awards crown ‘A Chorus Line,’ ‘Fame’ as local theater champs

The 36th annual Helen Hayes Awards were supposed to be May 18 at The Anthem.

However, due to the pandemic, the winners were announced virtually on Friday.

Winners were divided into 鈥淗ayes鈥 for Equity casts and 鈥淗elen鈥 for non-Equity casts.

On the Equity side,聽Signature Theatre’s “A Chorus Line”聽won Outstanding Production in a Musical (Hayes), while聽1st Stage’s “The Brothers Size” won Outstanding Production in a Play (Hayes).

On the non-equity side, GALA Theatre’s “Fame, the Musical” won Outstanding Production in a Musical (Helen), upsetting Constellation Theatre鈥檚 鈥淟ittle Shop of Horrors,鈥 which entered the night with the most total nominations with 11.

Theater Alliance’s “Blood at the Root” won Outstanding Production in a Play (Helen).

“The Band’s Visit” at the Kennedy Center won Outstanding Visiting Production.
