What do nuns, the Civil War and Ireland have in common? Check out this obscure DC monument to find out

This video is no longer available.

It鈥檚 a D.C. monument that could be deemed 鈥渙bscure鈥 on name alone.

In today鈥檚 edition of 鈥淢att About Town,鈥 海角社区app鈥檚 Matt Kaufax heads to M Street Northwest to learn about the patriotic and prayerful story behind the 鈥淣uns of the Battlefield” Memorial.

The monument commemorates the service of Irish Catholic nuns who worked on the battlefield as nurses during the American Civil War, and was erected just before WWI, at a time when the patriotism of Irish Americans was questioned.

It served in part as a statement of loyalty and support for troops, but the story took an interesting turn when fiery Irish Catholic artist Jerome Connor (selected to build the statue), clashed with his benefactors and the Commission of Fine Arts.

Check out the video of Matt鈥檚 up-close and personal tour of the monument where he found out it wasn’t quite perfect peace and harmony in the end.
