Vitamin D deficiency more closely linked to diabetes

WASHINGTON —聽New research links low vitamin D levels with diabetes, regardless of how much a person聽weighs.

The findings indicate there’s a direct correlation between vitamin D聽and a body’s ability to metabolize glucose.

The published by the Endocrine Society in the聽Endocrine Society’s Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism聽suggests you may be able to lower your risk of both diabetes and obesity聽by eating a healthy diet and getting plenty of activity —聽outdoor activity — so the sun can stimulate your body into making vitamin D.

Previous studies have found people with low levels of vitamin D, which helps absorb calcium and maintain bone and muscle health, are more likely to be obese.
