Mistakes cost D.C. millions in parking, traffic tickets

WASHINGTON – D.C. has lost out on millions of dollars by tossing out thousands of parking and traffic tickets due to employee mistakes.

reports the District voided more than 31,000 parking and traffic citations in 2010, costing the city $4.1 million, according to the District’s inspector general.

The city lost more than $54,000 in fines due to illegible ticket writing, and $721,000 for tickets with missing or incorrect information.

About 12,000 tossed-out tickets resulted from officers failing to show up for a hearing.

Mayor Vincent Gray tells the Examiner the city will work to improve the city’s performance.
