WASHINGTON – Although the forecast didn’t call for it on Saturday morning it was raining — raining Easter eggs.
Three hundred and thirty kids could hardly wait until the helicopter finished dumping 5,000 plastic eggs, which were stuffed with candy, onto a soccer field at the Emmanuel Christian School in Manassas.
“I’m gonna pick up some Easter eggs, I’m so excited,” said Takiyah Easom, 4, from Manassas. “The helicopter is going to drop off the eggs.”
But the kids had to painfully wait about 20 mintues on the sideline for the helicopter to make three or four different egg drops.
As the kids tried their best to wait patiently they broke out into a chant, “Drop those eggs. Drop those eggs.”
Once the chopper dumped the last of its load, the kids scrambled onto the field in a frenzy stuffing the eggs into their bags. Some had the help of parents while others had to fend for themselves.
Pastor Brandon Hembree of the Impact Church put on the high-flying Easter egg drop, for the first time.
“We figured out, what’s the best way to get eggs out on the field and a helicopter seemed like a great idea,” he said.
The pastor say this was a big hit even before the event happened. Originally they had 300 kids registered but other kids wanted in so they added 30 more spots. He says those spots filled up fast and that they still had requests from other kids wanting to participate. The pastor says next year they will be opening it up to 500 children.
Hembree says the egg drop is a way to give back to the community.
