Matt About Town: This obscure DC monument honoring one of America’s greatest generals has a bizarre (and slightly risqu茅) back story

This video is no longer available.

At the intersection of Massachusetts and Rhode Island avenues along 16th Street, you鈥檒l find a monument that has what might be D.C.鈥檚 most wild back story.

In today鈥檚 episode of 鈥淢att About Town,鈥 海角社区app鈥檚 Matt Kaufax heads to Scott Circle in Northwest D.C., alongside everyone’s favorite National Park spokesman (and recurring MAT guest) Ranger Mike, to explore the baffling tale behind the Scott Statue.

Dedicated to American General Winfield Scott 鈥 perhaps one of the most celebrated early military commanders in our nation’s history other than George Washington 鈥 this monument caused some controversy after its completion in 1874.

Its sculptor, Henry Kirk Brown, was a world-renowned artist who is also responsible for several of D.C.’s 10 major equestrian statues that exist in the city today. But Brown found himself in the crosshairs of Scott’s family after he built the statue depicting General Scott riding a mare (a female horse).

As Matt found out, Scott’s family wanted their late patriarch depicted riding a stallion (a male horse), even though it was a well-known historical fact that Scott himself preferred to ride mares.

So, what did the world-renowned sculptor do to acquiesce to the family’s wishes? You could say 鈥 he found himself in a bit of a pickle.

Come along with Matt on this hilarious journey to explore what happens when some 鈥 parts are added after the fact.
